- how DO you keep a house clean, anyhow?
get rid of your children.
A less drastic measure is to confine their stuff to their rooms... confine your stuff to one space, etc....

- i feel like i'm being a parental hardass to ethan way too often.
ummm.... I think that's what parents do.

- i'm not sure i know how to parent older children. toddlers are so much simpler.
Yes they are.

- oh my god just think when they're teenagers.
Not to freak you out or anything but the "teenager" years seem to start around the age of 10 these days. You should start reading up on the subject, you've still got 4 or 5 years to figure it out. And if you start implementing "teenager" strategies now it might make the actually teenager years a little easier. Just a thought.

I like the bookshelf idea for the lower spaces, and even though I'm sure you have a gas fireplace, wouldn't a stack of firewood be kind of homey looking there... next to the gas fireplace? Whatever you decide to put on the top side sections, you should vary the height, kind of make it L shaped, and backwards L shaped for the other side. Something like colorful glass vases would catch the light from the windows. I'm at a complete loss for that center section... something big, that fills the space, so that you can't pile stuff up there. And you should think about some sort of decorative tiles or iron scroll work to hang above the firplace in that blank space.

And oooooh, check out fly lady, I think it's flylady.com, you might have to do a search.

"People often write me and ask how I keep my wood floors so clean when I live with a child and a dog, and my answer is that I use a technique called Suffering From a Mental Illness. "

That's how I do it anyway :)

Like Caitlin, I think cubbies would be nice, or if you are trying to keep it a little more formal, bookshelves. In the top part maybe some kind of art work like a sculpture? I like these <a href="http://www.pier1.com/catalog/productdetail.aspx?oid=122820&returnURL=http%3a%2f%2fwww.pier1.com%2fcatalog%2fcollections.aspx%3ffh_view_size%3d8%26fh_eds%3d%25u00df%26fh_view%3dlister%26fh_refpath%3dfacet_59433428%26fh_location%3d%2f%2fpier1direct%2fen_US%2fcategories%3c%7b110299%7d%2fcategories%3c%7b110343%7d%26fh_start_index%3d24&fh_view_size=8&fh_eds=%u00df&fh_view=lister&fh_refpath=facet_59433428&fh_location=//pier1direct/en_US/categories%3C{110299}/categories%3C{110343}&fh_start_index=24" rel="nofollow">guys</a>.

<blockquote>how DO you keep a house clean, anyhow?</blockquote>

I remember it being a lot easier before Paul learned how to walk... and climb... and circumvent the childproofing...

I love the fireplace area. Maybe you could visit <a href="http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&ct=res&cd=1&url=http%3A%2F%2Fikeahacker.blogspot.com%2F&ei=3KPNRvfSNaW8epeUtfsP&usg=AFQjCNH3uMHSqJp5GspqEyKZGzI5L5KzzA&sig2=X8BMTDyC47aErp2G1jbF1Q" rel="nofollow">Ikea Hacker</a> and figure out a way to make the lower parts cubbies for the kids? We bought an ikea shelf a few weeks ago, with the idea being that Paul would keep his toys in the lower bins, but it sort of hasn't made it upstairs yet :/.
