time for an iphone jailbreak!

Published by at 9:16 pm under amy's head,iphone

I’ve been kind of ansy, wanting to jailbreak my iphone, but kind of nervous to mess with it. I’ve been (semi) following along with the hackers’ iphone blogs and a few other iphone feeds and it seemed as if even if you jailbroke your phone, there weren’t many 3rd party apps for 2.0 anyway, so, easy for me to put off the ants in my pants and just wait.

but no more!!

Quake! QUAKE 4IPHONE! [1. This link also has other 3rd party apps listed, which might be useful for anyone to read through who is asking, “why would you want to jailbreak your phone, anyway?”]

You see before you, an old quake fanatic. It’s been years, but if there’s network play, I look forward to stomping james into kingdom come. (I used to be able to do it!)

I know what I’ll be doing this weekend.

    Reading this blog entry was a gigantic learning curve for me. It was kind of like reading in Polish or something at first, and then having to decipher what it all meant based on the little bits I understood.

    Do any other common folk read your blog, or am I the only so-not-tech-savvy fan of yours? Just curious.

    @http://lindanapikoski.blogspot.com/:

    Whoops! I didn’t think I was being that cryptic, but my bad! Quake is a 1st person shooter game for the PC that came out in the 90s. I used to head home for teh weekends in college and play network games against my brothers. I had a job in Atlanta where at the end of the day we’d all boot up Quake and spend a half hour hunting each other down and blasting them to hell (also called “fragging” them to hell!) I’m not a huge gamer girl, but Quake I think was the exeption. Doom was the first real decent 1st person shooter, and Quake came quickly after.

    Next, I’m assuming ‘jailbreak’ is foreign to you — it’s the term one uses to hack the iphone so that one can install 3rd party applications. A virgin iphone can only install applications from the apple itunes app-store. Hackers developed software that will spring your iphone from “jail”, so to speak, so that you can install 3rd party apps, and developers can get at the guts of it and do cool stuff.

    Also, “jailbreak” is not to be confused with “unlock” – jailbreak: lets users install 3rd party applications, whereas unlock: lets the user use the phone with a different cellular network. An unlocked phone could be put on a non-AT&T network, but may not necessarily be able to install 3rd party applications. I don’t think there’s a hack for unlocking the latest iphone yet, just jailbreaking.

    So, when I saw that “Quake 4 Iphone,” a 3rd party application which won’t be found in the app store, probably ever, was available, I knew I’d be jailbreaking my phone so I could try it out 🙂
